A nurse, (Pierreux), steals the ring from the corpse of a clairvoyant and is scared to death by the what she believes to be the woman's spirit or is it all in her guilty mind.
"The Telephone". From a story by Snyder.
A high-class prostitute, (Mercier), is terrorised by mysterious phone calls and her friend, (Alfonsi), arrives to calm her nerves, but the caller breaks into the apartment and strangles the wrong woman. The prostitute kills the man, but the telephone calls continue from beyond the grave.
"The Wurdalak". From a story by Tolstoi.
An East European family are destroyed by Gorka, (Karloff), the head of the household who has become infected when he slays a vampire called a Wurdalak.
The film demonstrates Bava's great use of direction and style before interference from the American distributors. "The Telephone" episode was dubbed by American International and changed to reveal that it was the prostitute's friend who made the mysterious phone calls to try and frighten the prostitute into inviting her to bed and begin a lesbian affair. Needless to say all the shock value of this originally taut story was frittered away.
AIP. claimed that the end shot of "The Wurdalak" was too scary and insisted that Bava tone it down, which he did by pulling the camera back from a shot of Gorka and his grandson speeding away on horseback to reveal the crew holding branches and the actors riding stuffed horses. They never used the shot.
The American company also imposed the Les Baxter score.

An above average television compedium.

The Trollenberg mountain has a reputation for death. Professor Crevett, (Mitchell), summons Alan Brooks, (Tucker), from the government agency UNO. on vacation in the village at the base of the mountain to investigate the activities of a mysterious cloud that contains cyclopean alien creatures that communicate with telepathy, possess lethal tentacles and a fondness for decapitating humans. One woman, (Munro), who also has a telepathic ability, threatens the aliens' plans, but she and a multitude of survivors from the village have take refuge in a mountain observatory until the RAF. are called in to fire-bomb the creatures.
An enjoyable B-movie with cheap effects including the alien cloud made mostly from cotton wool moved over a photograph of the sky. The cast provide suitable hysterics.
In the television script by Key the setting is in Austria and the cyclopean creatures are called Ixodes.

A space mission to Venus returns to earth and lands in the Mediterranean Sea near Gerra, Italy, but a specimen egg of Venusian life dislodges from the rocket which is found by young Pepe, (Bradey), who sells it to a zoologist, (Puglia). A creature hatches from the egg, but the earth's atmosphere causes it to grow twice it's size every few hours, becoming a giant that destroys parts of Rome. Two armies fail to stop the creature's rampage until it is seen on top of the Coliseum and the wall is blasted from under it, causing the monster to fall to it's death.
An effective monster helps to lift this uninspired film above many of the other monster-on-the-loose releases.

Aliens that are intent on colonising the earth are prevented from waging war due to their religion, so they capture five humans from different parts of the world and give them each a capsule that when opened will wipe out their entire race in twenty seven days. The five people return to earth and go into hiding to discuss their new found power while some unscrupulous government agencies try to find them. Eventually Russia's KGB. obtain a capsule, open it and wipe out the entire population of the USSR. The free world manages to survive.
A trite film that is not subtle when revealing it's anti-Communist message.
Some scenes are borrowed from Earth Versus the Flying Saucers.

"The House of the Seven Gables".
A man, (Price), searching for a hidden fortune in a haunted house encounters the reincarnation of a man who was burnt at the stake for practising witchcraft. The treasure seeker eventually meets with a horrible death in the vault and the house crumbles around him.
A cheaply made vehicle for Vincent Price.
The House of Seven Gables was previously filmed in 1940 by Universal and also starred Vincent Price.

Psychopathic young man George Clifford, (Bennett), disguises himself as his retarded brother and kills his hated stepfather. The warped young man then murders one of two women with whom he shares a house and attempts to rape the other, (Mills), but she discovers him in disguise while holding an axe. His murders are blamed on the "twisted" chromosome inherited from his parents evident by the presence of his mongoloid brother.
An unpleasant shocker with plenty of menace that offensively links Downs syndrome with homicide.
The National Association for Retarded Children insisted that a disclaimer was added stating "that there is no established scientific connection between mongolism and psychotic or criminal behaviour".

In London during 1874, the morose and reclusive Dr. Jekyll, (Massie), is experimenting to try and unlock the secrets of the human mind, while his bored wife continues an affair with Jekyll's best friend Paul, (Lee). A potion that Jekyll administers to himself transforms him into the handsome and evil Mr. Edward Hyde, but he soon discovers that he cannot control the transformations after witnessing his wife in the arms of another man. As Hyde, he kills the man with a python and then rapes his wife who dies when she falls through a glass roof. The police suspect the reclusive doctor, but are convinced he is dead when Edward Hyde produces the charred corpse of a servant that he claims was Dr. Jekyll.
An intriguing drama of a man's turmoil when faced with his inner self that keeps away from the usual Jekyll/Hyde clichés and is bolstered by Massie's good performance.
Oliver Reed appears briefly as a bouncer.

Pirates kidnap a woman from a ship bound for Australia, but a young man, (Arness), rescues her, but they and others land on an island inhabited by prehistoric creatures.
Unfortunately the cast are not seen on the island until the last 20 minutes of the film.
The two dinosaurs engaged in a battle together are borrowed from One Million BC. (1940) which was made before the practice of staging live reptile fights for the cameras was banned.

After accidentally killing his wife during a stageshow, the famous master illusionist Duke Duquesne, (Romero), finally dies and arranges for his coffin to be chained-up upon his death, promising to return from the grave. The other condition of his will is that his daughter, (Stevens), must stay a full week at his home before she can inherit the estate. Her friend, (Jones), agrees to stay with her so that together they can face the eerie events to follow.
An occasionally effective thriller with creepy moments, but the plot meanders along to a predictable close.

From ape to modern scientist, man has attained great things, but along the way he has had help from two sleek black monoliths that impart power and knowledge. One such monolith has just been uncovered on the Moon, even though no one can discover what it is or why it is there. The spaceship Discovery, equipped with the latest computer technology, is sent to Jupiter to trace the source of a powerful signal received by the monolith. During their voyage, the ship's computer HAL malfunctions, killing one of the crew. Dave, (Dullea), the remaining astronaut must dismantle the computer before he is also killed, but he discovers another monolith in space that transforms him into the ultimate being, a reborn star child.
A extremely visual film that fans believe holds an intelligent insight into the dehumanisation of mankind. Others realise that the plot is emotionless, confusing and only a vehicle for the Academy Award winning special effects.
Kubrick cut 17 minutes of footage to its present running time.
HAL's initials were made up from the letters that come before IBM.
The Visual Effects won an Academy Award and received nominations for the Best Director, Screenplay and Art direction categories.

Six Northern tourists are slaughtered in a small Southern town during a civil war memorial service. When questioned about the tourist's disappearance the police say that the town hasn't existed since the Union Army decimated it during the civil war. The town reappears every 100 years to vengefully slay any Northerners the inhabitants can find.
Although cut by various censorship bodies, Lewis' original gorefest contains footage of a man being crushed by a boulder, a dismemberment, a human barbecue and someone rolling down a hill in a barrel lined with spikes. An influential release filmed in St. Cloud, Florida with obvious script and acting problems.
