LUST FOR A VAMPIRE (1970/Hammer) 95mins. UK. Distributed: Anglo-EMI. Aka: TO LOVE A VAMPIRE (US). Credits: Dir: Jimmy Sangster; Prod: Harry Fine & Mike Style; Sc: Tudor Gates; Ph: David Muir; Ed: Spencer Reeve; Art: Don Mingaye; Mu: George Blackler; Mus: Harry Robinson. From "Carmilla" by Sheridan Le Fanu. Cast: Ralph Bates, Yutte Stensgaard, Pippa Steele, Mike Raven (Austin Churton Fairman), Michael Johnston, Caryl Little, Luan Peters, Judy Matheson, Barbara Jefford, Michael Brennan, Suzanna Leigh, Christopher Cunningham, Helen Christie, David Healy, Jack Melford, Erik Chitty, Christopher Neame, Harvey Hall. Beautiful vampire Carmilla Karnstein, (Stensgaard), is risen from her tomb by the evil Count Karnstein, (Raven), and is sent to a school for girls, where she seduces her classmates and wins the love of a school master, (Johnston), gladly recieving sexual attentions from both. As the bodies of her victims mount up, the school is reluctant to do anything for fear of adverse publicity, but the local villagers take matters into their own hands. Eventually the fleeing Carmilla is trapped by flames at castle Karnstein and is destroyed when a beam falls and steaks her through the heart. Due to the success of The Vampire Lovers, Hammer decided to repeat the lesbian-vampire formula once again, but the cheapnes of this production shows. In several scenes a shot of Christopher Lee's bloodshot eyes from another vampire film is inserted for close ups of Count Karnstein's eyes. However, it is the poor acting that ultimately lets the film down. The set was also used in Scars of Dracula. Mike Raven's voice was dubbed by another actor.
