ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET DOCTOR JEKYLL AND MISTER HYDE
(1953/Universal) 77mins. BW. US.
Aka: DEUX NIGAUDS CONTRE LE DR. JEKYLL ET MR. HYDE (France).
Credits: Dir: Charles Lamont; Prod: Howard Christie;
Sc: Leo Loels & John Grant; Ph: George Robinson; Ed: Russell Schoengarth; Sfx: David
S. Horsley; Art: Bernard Herzbrun & Eric Osborn; Mu: Bud Westmore & Jack Kevan;
Stunts: Eddie Parker; Mus: Joseph Gershenson & Hans Salter.
Cast: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Boris Karloff, Craig Stevens,
Reginald Denny, Helen Wescott, John Dierkes, Harry Cording, Eddie Parker.
In Victorian London, Doctor Jekyll, (Karloff), plots to kill his ward's fiancée. When
detectives, Tubby and Slim, (Abbott and Costello), learn of the plot they have difficulty
convincing Scotland Yard that it is the truth. Lou accidentally sits on a syringe full of
Jekyll's transformation serum and becomes a monster, changing some English policemen into
ghouls by biting them.
Also features the Frankenstein monster and a giant mouse.
A typical Abbott and Costello farce filled with the usual antics, but with the added class
of Karloff.
This is the fifth Abbott and Costello "Meet..." movie.
Stuntman Eddie Parker portrays Hyde.ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE INVISIBLE MAN
(1951/Universal) 82mins. BW. US.
Credits: Dir: Charles Lamont; Prod: Howard Christie; Sc: Frederic I.
Rinaldo, John Grant & Robert Lees; Ph: George Robinson; Ed: Virgil Vogel; Art: Bernard
Herzbrun & Richard Riedel; Sets: Russell A. Gausman & John Austin; Sfx: David S.
Horsley; Mu: Bud Westmore; Mus: Joseph Gershenson & Hans Salter.
From a story by Hugh Wedlock Jnr. and Howard Snyder, and the novel by H.G. Wells.
Cast: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Nancy Guild, Arthur
Franz, Adele Jergens, William Frawley, Sheldon Leonard, Gavin Muir, Sam Balter, John Day,
Donald Kerr.
A boxer, (Franz), who has escaped from prison to try and prove that he did not kill his
manager, hires private detectives, (Bud and Lou). When the boxer takes an invisibility
serum he manages to elude the police and help Lou win some boxing bouts. Eventually he
proves that a mobster, (Leonard), who has been fixing the fights, killed his manager.
The good effects nicely complement the comic duo's better-timed antics, and on some
occasions are actually funny in this parody of The Invisible Man (1933).
Claude Rains appears in a photograph.
ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY
(1955/Universal) 77mins. BW. US.
Credits: Dir: Charles Lamont, Prod: Howard Christie;
Sc: John Grant; Ph: George Robinson; Ed: Russell Schoengarth; Sfx: Clifford Stine; Art:
Alexander Golitzen & Bill Newberry; Mu: Bud Westmore; Mus: Joseph Gershenson. From a
story by Lee Loeb.
Cast: Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, Edwin Parker, Richard
Deacon, Peggy King, Dan Seymour, Marie Windsor, Michael Ansara, Kurt Katch, George Khoury,
Mel Welles, Donald Kerr, Richard Karlan.
"It has been said that a man's best friend is his mummy...!"
When Lou, (Costello), accidentally swallows a medallion that is the key to an ancient
treasure, the duo become involved with a group of treasure hunters. They all descend on
Klaris' Egyptian tomb, but the mummy, (Parker), has been kept alive by a secret sect to
guard Princess Ara's tomb. Finally the mummy and the treasure are all blown to pieces by a
stick of dynamite.
The last of Bud and Lou's fantasy outings together, and the last film that they made for
Universal. This has nothing new to offer an audience, only the usual antics of the stars
and a weak story.

Gilmore, Norman Jones, David Hutcheson, Derek Godfrey, Maurice Kaufman, Peter Jeffrey,

"Love means never having to say you're ugly!"
Aided by his silent servant Vularia, (North), Dr. Phibes, (Price), wreaks revenge on the
nine surgeons who failed to revive his wife, (Munro), after an accident in which he was
left severly handicapped. He can only speak through an electronic gadget, and eat or drink
through a hole in his neck. His vengeance takes the form of the seven curses of Pharaoh,
enacted in some unique and humorous ways. To relax Phibes plays at an ornate Wurlitzer
organ while the head surgeon has to save his son who is strapped to an operating table
below a vat of acid with the key to release the boy buried in his chest.
Price gives the audience a delicious performance with just the right amount of dark
humour. Advertised as Price's one hundredth film.
Sequel: Dr. Phibes Rises Again.
THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN (1957/Exclusive/Hammer) 91mins. BW. UK.
Aka: THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN OF THE HIMALAYAS (85mins. US).
Credits: Dir: Val Guest; Prod: Aubrey Baring; Ex.Prod:
Michael Carreras; Sc: Nigel Kneale; Ph: Arthur Grant; Ed: Bill Lenny; Art: Ted Marshall;
Des: Bernard Robinson; Mu: Phil Leaky; Mus: John Hollingsworth.
From the television play "The Creature" by Nigel Kneale.
Cast: Forrest Tucker, Peter Cushing, Maureen Connell,
Richard Wattis, Wolfe Morris, Robert Brown, Arnold Marle, Michael Brill, Anthony Chinn.
"See it with someone brave!"
Tom Friend, (Tucker), mounts an expedition to track the Yeti and convinces a botanist
named Rollason, (Cushing), to join him. Although Friend wants to capture the creature
alive to make some money, Rollason realises that they are a community of peaceful and
advanced creatures that are trying to drive the invading humans to their deaths with
telepathy. When Friend and the others die, Rollason is spared by the Yeti who know that he
will try and disuade anyone from making further expeditions while they wait for mankind to
destroy itself so that they can once again come down from the mountains.
A well made morality story. The character McNee is based on mountaineer Eric Shipton who
in 1951 followed a series of strange footprints, but never found out what made them.

Marvin, (Garland), and then promptly disappears after he discovers the horrible side
effect and returns to the laboratory for drastic radiation treatment. However, during a
struggle with the doctor's assistant, Mannon, (Chaney), who had tried to rape his wife
when she came looking for her husband, Paul receives a larger dose of radiation and turns

strippers!

lover, (Battaglia), and uses them in his experiments to reanimate blood. However, they
come back to life for revenge after the scientist marries his wife's half-sister Jenny for

photography raises this above the usual Italian gore films.

Charles Fengriffin, (Ogilvy), marries Catherine, (Beecham), and takes her to live in his
ancestral home. Catherine starts seeing a portrait painting come to life and a hideously
disfigured man keeps appearing who has a striking resemblance to Silas, (Whitehead), the
estates' woodsman. A family curse is responsible for the apparitions made many years ago
when Charles's grandfather, (Lom), raped the wife of Silas's grandfather and severed his
hand off when the woodsman hit him trying to protect his wife. The curse states that the
first virgin bride to enter the home of Fengriffin shall bear the woodsman's child.
Catherine becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child with no hand on one arm.
An atmospheric classic with moments of true horror. One scene shows Charles breaking apart
his grandfather's grave and smashing the skeleton. Beecham gives a fine performance as the
young bride suffering under the curse.

(Steffan), hired to restore the statue tries to help her overcome the possession.
Meanwhile the evil Count of Montebruno, (Gora), and the malevolent Ilda, (Berti),

pervades the work.

A space ship from Earth arrives on Mars where the crew encounter several bizarre monsters,
including a giant rat on claw legs and a giant amoeba creature that attacks when they
decide to leave. One crew member dies and another will die of a fungus infection if not
brought back to Earth in time, but an intelligent force prevents the ship from leaving the
planet while it decides whether or not to kill the crew. Finally it releases the ship
allowing the crew to warn earth never to visit the planet again.
A fairly effective, but slow moving tale filmed in what was hailed as
"Cinemagic"; all the Martian landscapes are in negative and tinted orange.
THE ANIMAL WORLD (1955/Warner)

A documentary that contains scenes of dinosaurs designed by Willis O'Brien and

"The first motion picture to require a face-to-face warning. Maybe the last shock
film you will ever want to see!"
Thirteen heirs at a deserted resort are murdered one by one. The culprits are involved in
a scheme to control a dead Countess's beautiful bay side estate for redevelopment.
A gory "body-count" film that is also an effective thriller despite the weak
storyline and a constant use of zoom shots. Although one big macabre ironic joke, the
excessive violence ensured that this was released in many cut versions. Fans of Bava's
work know that his narratives are weak, but enjoy his mastery of cinematic technique which
includes a woman's face split with an axe, a woman restricted to her wheelchair is
garrotted and lovers are impaled with a spear.
Re-released as THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, PART II to cash in on the other film's success,
although it bears no relation to the film at all.
For American release theatre patrons had to pass through a "final warning
station".
Banned in Britain.
